In recent years, Chorley & District NHS Hospital has become increasingly
dependent on mains electricity due to expansion and the installation
of new plant and equipment. With the results of power failure being
so potentially serious, the Estates Department reviewed standby provision
and revealed an unacceptable shortfall, with protection capacity at
just 33%.
Corrective
action has now been taken in partnership with FDL Generators
of Aldermaston, which specialises in the design, installation and
maintenance of made-to-measure generators and associated UPS systems
to integrate smoothly with all electrical networks. FDL has brought
standby provision up to 100% by removing an existing 385KVA generating
set and replacing it with a new, more advanced 1000KVA unit. This
is precisely matched with UPS automatic switching and control gear.
The project also involved relocating a 850KVA generator to another
area of the hospital and this was also undertaken by FDL, including
all necessary re-cabling.
